About Us
Who is Selective Press?
Selective Press is a team specialising in creating valuable academic material for upper primary and early high school students. Selective Press is a team led by editor-in-chief, Seline Ho, who has gained many years experience in preparing students for the selective high schools examination and private school scholarship examinations. As a result, Selective Press has a clear understanding of the requirements and skills required to successfully prepare your child for the examinations.
Selective Press was first established in 2012 with the publication of its first book, Special GA. Following its success, Special GA 2 was released shortly afterwards. Selective Press Publications have since expanded to include Text Type Writing Samples and Understanding Poetry – Multiple Choice. Selective Press is currently working on new publications in order to give your child the most valuable resources they need to succeed.
Why Selective Press?
At Selective Press, we believe that there is a growing gap between the difficulty of commercially available examination preparation materials and the examinations itself. Many of the books that are commercially available are outdated and do not reflect the growing difficulty of these examinations. The selective high school examination has grown to be more and more competitive every year and we believe that many examination preparation books do not reflect the true difficulties of these examinations.
Thinking Skills Tests is a series that we have tailored to aid your child in their preparation for the Thinking Skills component of the exam. This is a particularly important section of the exam as there is no school mark associated with this subject. Hence, it is up to the student to perform the best they can as there is no ‘fall-back’ mark that they can rely on. We have found that students who perform strongly in these examinations always have a strong base in the Thinking Skills section of the exam. In other words, in order to increase the student’s chance of successfully passing the exam, it is important to focus on the Thinking Skills section of the exam.
English is another subject that many students struggle with. Many students find poetry difficult to interpret and understand and there is a lack of material that properly matches the difficulty of poetry that students will encounter in the exam. Understanding Poetry – Multiple Choice is a series that challenges students in the same way that the selective high school exam does. It focuses on the skills required to successfully answer multiple choice questions and how to approach them.
Our publications help to prepare students in the best way possible for the selective high school exam as well as private school scholarship examinations by closing the difficulty and style gap that exists between available material and the actual examination.
